Modul8: intro & secrets

GarageCUBE is a Geneva based label founded in 2003

Its various creative projects range from Modul8, a professional VJ / real-time video editing application, Modul8 Visual Team, a VJ collective and the Mapping Festival, an annual VJing festival in Geneva, Switzerland.

Modul8 is a revolutionary MacOS X application designed for real time video mixing and compositing. It has been designed for VJs and live performers.

Participation in the workshop will require a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X v10.4.11 or above. A short term license for use for the duration of the workshop providing that we are informed by participants in advance with an email address so that we can send it to them two days in advance.

The workshop will span two days and cover both basic and advanced concepts.

Boris Edelstein
Geneva, Switzerland based artist Boris Edelstein has been exploring the live video medium since the mid 90's. Performing VJ sets in venues around the globe. These experiences evolved into the conception and co-programming of the computer based real time video software modul8. Since its first release in 2005 modul8 is fast becoming the leading software of choice for real time video performance.

Boris is also involved in the technical and art direction of the Mapping VJ Festival. The annual festival takes place in Geneva and showcases some of the finest video based performances along with workshops and a chance for artists, both new and seasoned to share their ideas.

In addition to these endeavors Boris continues to explore the multitude of areas that real time video performance is entering such as video installations, collaborative performances with musicians, theatrical productions and dance companies. Highlights include the multi-projection installation with Paris based architecture collective Exyzt, close collaborations with the musician Steve Buchanan, dance company "Deep'n'Dance" and the theater company "Apsara."


Ilan Katin
Specializing in drawings, live video performance and animation Ilan's work has been published in a variety of print and online publications. His video performances include numerous collaborations and locations in the United Sates and Europe.

For the past decade Ilan Katin has worked in a wide variety of disciplines including programming, graphic design, illustration, comics, animation and broadcast design. His illustrations, logos and character designs have been featured in a variety of online and print publications. As a video performance artist Ilan has provided visual support for a variety of musicians including o.blaat, Lance Blisters, Becca Schack, Bora Yoon, ErwinMusic, Lukas Ligeti and The Mad Scene. He has also performed countless VJ sets in a variety of locations in the United States and Europe.

Ilan's performance work addresses the ‘here’ and ‘now’ using live drawing, animations and found video to formulate expressions ranging from human thoughts to poetic dissonance. The first of these works called 'eggsounds' has been performed at the 'Mapping Festival' in Geneva Switzerland (2005) and Participant INC Gallery in New York City as part of the Roberta Fleck Memorial Cinema (2005). In 2007 Ilan performed 'decrepticon 0001', an eight hour performance where he interacted with the audience through projected live drawing.

Since 2005 Ilan has been developing 'decrepticon.' The project is executed through a variety of mediums such as performance, drawings, writings and videos.
